At the request of a CEO, I’ve spent the last few months phishing a company that is one of our favorite managed services clients. I crafted some LinkedIn, Facebook and other emails specifically targeting these end users and their normal day to day operations. I was anxious to see how permeable they were as an organization. We’ve spent quite a bit of time warning end-users not to click links within an email, and other good cyber-hygiene practices. However, I still wondered how likely they were to get hit with Ransomware.
As I was crafting the content and getting better at delivering a spear-phishing email, I was also researching recent statistics about Ransomeware and found them to be pretty startling!
According to a review by IBM security, the number of emails infected by Ransomware went up 6000% from 2016 to 2017!
Email phishing is the #1 vehicle for Ransomware delivery and a staggering 91% of all malware is delivered by email.
Why?
Because odds are there is one employee who will click on anything!
The cyber threat landscape is evolving.
Everyone knows Healthcare was a top target but did you know Manufacturing, Real Estate, and Law Firms have all seen a astronomical increase in attacks? These are some of the industries that also contain valuable client content and information.
If you haven’t had a cybersecurity discussion with your employees, do it before its too late. It’s the #1 defensive move you can take to keep your organization safe.
