When it comes to information security for your business there are numerous things to consider. Have you ever thought about how easily your data could be stolen, or how big of a target your company may be, or what happens to your business reputation if you are the reason someone’s identity is stolen?
At Computek all too often we encounter companies that grossly underestimate the value of the data in their network. Time and again we here, “Oh we don’t need all that extra security stuff, they are only after the big guys anyway.”
The reality is, this just isn’t true.
As a matter of fact, the big guys have a whole team of IT staff looking out for them making them much more difficult and expensive to target.
A hacker knows the easy data comes from the average small business that is unprepared and usually ignores some of the most basic security measures. They know you have fewer defenses and therefore they can easily gain access with little to no fear of being monitored or caught.
Three things you can do today to better protecting your business:
- Password complexity – “123456”, “password” and “abc123” are not secure passwords, they are invitations to breach your data. You must use secure, unique and independent passwords. There are several password generators if you need help creating one, as well as password programs to help you maintain the list of ever growing passwords.
- Having an Antivirus/ Firewall application installed – Recall the saying “you get what you pay for”, well that rings true here as well. Do you really think that all the freebies out there have your best interest at heart and will keep you secure? One major antivirus company that provides a free version of their software changed their privacy policy in October of 2015. This change basically allows them to sell your internet browsing history to advertisers to make money from your internet searches, and it’s all perfectly legal. You ‘agreed’ to it when you accepted the license to install it. Be willing to pay for a full antivirus/ firewall package, your business and individual security are worth it!
- Patches/Updates – Keeping your system up to date with the security patches that Microsoft, Adobe, Java as well as other vendor provide to you will go a long way. These patches or updates mean that someone has found or exploited a potential vulnerability in their software, so they created a “fix” for it, and it’s free. There is no reason for you not to keep these up to date.
And lastly, you can call us to schedule a Free Computek Network Security Analysis report. No strings attached, we will give you an IT assessment on your business and show you where you may be vulnerable and how we can fix it!
